The second series of The Fall is due to begin filming in Belfast at the end of next month.
When plans were announced for a spin-off TV series based on Thomas Harris’ 1981 novel Red Dragon (the first appearance of cinematic horror icon Dr Hannibal ‘The Cannibal’ Lecter), with the creative team of Star Trek: Voyager and Heroes writer Bryan Fuller onboard alongside 30 Days Of Night director David Slade and the dream casting of charismatic Dane Mads Mikkelsen in the title role, expectations were understandably high.
It’s been 20 years since genre giant The X Files first appeared on our screens. Over the course of nine seasons and 202 episodes the show racked up an impressive number of guest appearances by established actors, as well as a very high hit rate of then-unknowns who would go on to much greater things.

The X-Files was a pretty integral part of my school days. Watching the episode was just as important as talking about it the next day. An incredibly unique piece of television, there has really been nothing quite like it, although you can certainly see its influence in many modern cult procedural shows like Supernatural and Fringe.

So now we know why the BBC was so quick to announce a second series. It was a warning shot, to prepare us for the idea that the momentum of The Fall would carry on past 5 episodes, and that we’d all be left craving some more of that sweet sweet darkness like the Monday night drama masochists we are.
