Sky One has made a TV adaptation of Deborah Harkness’ 2011 debut novel, A Discovery of Witches. This big-budget rendering of the popular fantasy book has finally been given a premiere date as well, and the first full trailer has recently arrived on the web.

The programme will debut on Sky One on Friday September 14th, going out at 9pm.

That trailer was preceded by this brief teaser clip, which arrived on the web in November of last year…

A Discovery of Witches is a historical fantasy that follows Diana Bishop (played here by Theresa Palmer from Lights Out and Hacksaw Ridge) as she embraces her magical heritage under the watchful eye of resident vampire Matthew Clairmont (played by Matthew Goode from The Imitation Game and Ordeal By Innocence). Diana is plunged into a world of creatures and nightmares when she uncovers a missing artefact that many would get their hands on.

The book version of A Discovery Of Witches kicked of Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy, with sequels entitled Shadow Of Night and The Book Of Life following in the original novel’s footsteps. A prequel book, entitled Time’s Convert, will come out this autumn. So, if Sky’s adaptation does well, there is plenty of scope for expansion and continuation.

Kate Brooke, of Bancroft and Mr Selfridge, wrote all eight episodes of Sky One’s A Discovery Of Witches series and serves as the series’ showrunner. Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner, both of whom work at the Bad Wolf production company and helped to bring Doctor Who back to TV in 2005, are working on the series as executive producers alongside Harkness.
