Jenna Coleman’s ‘Victoria’ will return for a second season

ITV has ordered a second season of Victoria.

Starring Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) as the young Queen alongside Tom Hughes (The Game) as Prince Albert, the period drama launched last month.

The eight-part first season has so far averaged 7.7 million viewers and a 29.7% share of viewing, based on consolidated overnights, making it the top rated ITV drama of the year so far.

Season 2 will again be written by Daisy Goodwin.

ITV’s Director of Television, Kevin Lygo commented: “Mammoth and Daisy Goodwin have brought the characters so vividly to life in this series, and we’re thrilled with the reception for Victoria. We’re pleased to be able to confirm that Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes will return to continue the story on ITV.”

The sixth episode, ‘The Queen’s Husband’, airs this Sunday at 9pm on ITV.

Very happy about this. I’ve been very impressed with the show and everyone involved. I also appreciate the fact they aren’t limiting their audience by going all Versailles on the subject matter (as some had suggested it might), creating show with a much wider appeal in the process; the show’s steamy but it’s not R-rated and yes there’s a big difference. (And yes I know there are still 3 episodes to go, but the BBFC website gives them ratings of no higher than 12 which is on part with Doctor Who so I’m not expecting the show to generate any OFCOM complaints in its remaining 3 installments!).

Great news. Certainly one of the best dramas on the tele this year with top quality acting from Jenna Coleman and Rufus Sewell. I am certain both of them, as well as the show, will get well deserved BAFTA nods next year. One of the best things ITV has done in ages.
