Pearl Mackie: ‘Doctor Who’ companion Bill is ‘strong, sharp, vulnerable and geeky’

New Doctor Who star Pearl Mackie has revealed that her first impression of her character was that she’s “wicked”.

She was officially revealed this evening as the new Doctor Who companion, Bill.

Mackie commented: “Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in – I can’t wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series.”

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time actress added: “I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can’t wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!”

She joked: “I’m not sure it will ever become ‘the norm’ seeing crazy monsters on set, but I cannot wait to meet some more! The weirder the better, bring it on!”

The more I’m checkin’ out pictures of Pearl in character- the more I’m diggin’ it. BOY, with those eyebrows, she’s going to give Peter a run for his money. Roll on season 10.

I like what we’ve been shown so far and can’t wait to meet Bill properly. Clara leaves some big shoes to fill and so I don’t envy Pearl taking her place but if Moffat, Capaldi and the rest think she’s up to the job then that’s fine by me. And bravo for casting a virtual unknown!

If the casting and production team are overjoyed and excited about this announcement, Peter is clearly thrilled and with a solid theatrical background, that’s enough for me too. Also interesting that she is a musician. More guitar playing in the Tardis please!

I reckon Moffat saw how popular Shona was (and the calls to bring her back) and decided to write a similar type of character for the new companion – which I’m fine with, as Shona was great. And “Curious Incident” is a very experimental stageplay – Mackie’s experience with that will probably set her in good stead for the challenges Doctor Who presents.

  • Interesting to have a companion who’s a geek. It’s such an obvious choice that it almost feels odd they haven’t done it before. (By ‘geek’ I mean having a strong interest in popular culture, not just being a bit nerdy).
