Peter Capaldi teases the Doctor’s ‘cataclysmic mistake’ in ‘Doctor Who’ Season 9 opener

Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has hinted at what to expect from the two-part story which will open the new season.

Season 9 will kick off in September with two episodes written by Steven Moffat, titled ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’ and ‘The Witch’s Familiar’.

Capaldi told EW: “[The story] places the Doctor in a conflict that is central to his being, as well as containing some subtle tributes to the ’60s, and truly wonderful guest performances.”

He teased that the above photo “shows the Doctor about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions.”

The Scottish actor also revealed that Missy, as played by returning guest star Michelle Gomez, is “more magnificently bad than ever before.”

This fits with the Skaro/Davros rumours we’ve heard before. I’m not sure that that would be a good idea to do though. Of course he may well be aware of these rumours and is trying to put us off the scent. Properly excited now!

I’d love to see Peter squaring off with Davros. The last outing with 10 in Journey’s End was garbage in terms of the story but I thought Julian Bleach was really good. I can see him acting well against a better foe in Peter’s doctor. What I am most excited about this series is that it is going to be a wide ranging arc with several plot threads weaving through it and lots of timey-wimey. I could see Peter’s doctor doing something on Skaro which impacts the future course of the Daleks and then a splintering of the time lines. The rumour I am most happy to hear is that we may have multiple doctors and Claras in parallel timelines as a result of this cataclysmic event. I trust Steven to play this out well and honestly I have never been more excited about a new series than I am about this one.

Julian Bleach is the best Davros since the original. But the rumours involve meeting Davros as a child as in Tom’s “Could you kill that child?” speech from Genesis of the Daleks. That’s not a story that should ever be tampered with.

The first idea when i read the story wasn’t a child. I thought more in a young, healthy man getting even in a friendship and becoming the Davros we know due to events of the episode climax

And before anyone says anything it’s NOT down to personal preference what you call it. This is the official BBC designation.

Totally true – we just use ‘season’ so that there’s consistency across the site for all shows
