Apple TV+ has more to offer than you might realise — here’s our guide to six show to savour
A few months ago, we offered our guide to shows you might watch on Apple TV+ with a trial subscription. If you liked some or most of those (we did), you might have decided to stay with Apple TV+ a while longer (recent price rises notwithstanding) — if you have, here’s our guide to six more shows you might like to watch.
It’s also worth noting Apple TV+ is now available as an add-on for Virgin Media TV subscribers.
The Buccaneers
First up a new show, The Buccaneers. Coming later this week (Wednesday November 8), it looks set to fill the gap left while we wait for Bridgerton season 3. Instead of Regency romance, we have a series set much later in the nineteenth century, with the following summary:
The Buccaneers are the daughters of America’s new rich — beautiful and untameable, despite the best efforts of England’s finest governesses, they are on their way to London to snare themselves an aristocrat, low in funds but high in class, to make a perfect match.
Girls with money, men with power. New money, old secrets. A group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning …
The eight-episode drama is inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel of the same name.
The Enfield Poltergeist
Released just in time for Halloween, The Enfield Poltergeist will allow you to:
Experience the chilling true story of the world’s most famous poltergeist case through original audio recordings made inside the house as the events unfolded.
Drawing from over 250 hours of audio, this four-part documentary style re-enactment may not be for the faint of heart. Check the trailer for more chills!
Just make sure you don’t watch alone!
Hijack
Idris Elba — do we need to say more? Told in real time, Hijack is a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven-hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers. Idris Elba aside, the cast also includes Neil Maskell, Eve Myles, Christine Adams, Max Beesley, Archie Panjabi, Ben Miles and Kate Phillips.
Despite popular demand, this was intended as a single season story, but we can only hope!
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Time for a classic movie monster in the form of Godzilla! Here’s all you need to know:
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that levelled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organisation known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.
The film arrives on Apple TV+ on the 17th of this month (November 2023).
Severance
The strangest show we’ve seen so far on Apple TV+, the Ben Stiller directed Severance is both powerful and weird. The synopsis undersells this weirdly fascinating drama:
Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the centre of an unravelling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.
Season 1 is available now, the show has been renewed so your investment in watching won’t be wasted. The cast also includes Chistopher Walken and Patricia Arquette.
Slow Horses
Two seasons in and season 3 coming later this month, Slow Horses is the MI5 drama you didn’t know you needed in your life. It follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 due to their career-ending mistakes. Led by their brilliant but irascible leader, the notorious Jackson Lamb (Academy Award winner Gary Oldman), they navigate the espionage world’s smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces.
Here’s the season 3 trailer:
In season three, a romantic liaison in Istanbul threatens to expose a buried MI5 secret in London. When Jackson Lamb and his team of misfits are dragged into the fight, they find themselves caught in a conspiracy that threatens the future not just of Slough House but of MI5 itself. That’s our next binge watch sorted!
