There are sure to be more surprises in the cast, possibly including more past companions and past Doctors. Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor is expected to regenerate in the special so the next Doctor incarnation will likely make an appearance.

The special was filmed at Roath Lock Studios and on location at Hodge House, Grange Gardens, The Gate and West Bute Street in Cardiff.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall said this about the special:

“Jodie’s final feature-length story contains a plethora of treats and surprises for audiences and fans, not least the return of two of the most beloved companions in the show’s history [Ace and Tegan]. They’ll be helping the Doctor fight on three fronts, against her deadliest enemies: the Master, Daleks and Cybermen, in one huge story! For the BBC’s centenary, we’ll be celebrating the past, present and future of Doctor Who, in a fittingly thrilling, epic and emotional send-off for the thirteenth Doctor.”

Chris Chibnall told Radio Times that the thirteenth Doctor’s story will wrap up “in a really huge, action-y, mad heart-breaking way. There’ll be a lot of laughs and tears in that final episode… expect a celebration of the of [the BBC] within the story. There are some treats – Easter eggs and kisses to the past.”

From producer Matt Strevens in Doctor Who Magazine 575:

“The final story is a massive, feature-length epic – it was huge to shoot – with lots of surprises for fans of all ages. Jodie gets a really good send-off. I think it will push everybody’s buttons.”

From John Bishop:

“You know there’s something big about to happen. You can see the change in the Doctor and the change in the dynamic ad you just know there’s something around the corner.”

From Mandip Gill:

“We definitely sense something is coming because there is always something coming when the Doctor is around! Things have not been resolved by the end of [Legend of the Sea Devils] and I think that can be said for the relationship between Yaz and the Doctor but also the Doctor’s history and future.”

According to Doctor Who Magazine 577, Chris Chibnall will sign off on the final cut of the Doctor Who BBC Centenary special in the summer of 2022.

“We got some really gorgeous stuff in the last couple of days [of filming – October 13 and 14 of 2021],” Chibnall explained to the magazine.

Written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Jamie Magnus Stone, the Doctor Who BBC centenary special will air in Autumn 2022.
