It’s a celebration of the corporation’s commitment to crime stories, looking back across six decades.
The BBC have announced a celebratory series of its crime shows, ranging from the incredibly well-known to the obscure, the comic to the dark and brooding.
Drawn from six decades of stories, many titles will be preceded by brand new introductions from key cast and the creatives behind them, offering fresh insights and fond memories of these fan-favourites.
Plenty of these shows are already available on iPlayer, but we spotted a few highlights.
Campion
Running for two series in 1989 and 1990, the show was based on the Albert Campion mystery novels by Margery Allingham.
Peter Davison took the title role, with the late Brian Glover as his manservant Magersfontein Lugg.
Life on Mars
In 2006, the genre-bending Life on Mars starred John Simm as a modern-day detective who wakes up in the 1970s. Is he mad, in a coma… or has Sam Tyler really travelled back in time? The show also starred Philip Glenister as the fan-favourite DCI Gene Hunt and Liz White as WPC Annie Cartwright.
The show ran for two series, before spawning the 80s set follow-up Ashes to Ashes.
Sherlock
Making stars of its two leads, the 2010 take on Sherlock Holmes was a cultural phenomenon.
Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the blunt, brilliant consulting detective, with Martin Freeman playing Dr Watson (Martin Freeman).
The remainder of the list includes Dalziel and Pascoe, Death in Paradise, Happy Valley, Hinterland, Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Jonathan Creek, Law & Order, Life on Mars, Line of Duty, Luther, New Tricks, Shetland, The Cops, Waking The Dead and Wallander.
The BBC crime drama season launches on Wednesday 12 June at 10pm on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer. New episodes will land weekly.
First up is the mighty Death in Paradise, introduced by writer Tony Jordan and original cast member Don Warrington.
