Here’s our April 2025 Podcast Roundup – our favourites from the worlds of CultBox.
In no particular order, this month’s picks are…
The Sirens of Audio – Jean Marsh Remembered
The Doctor Who audiophile’s podcast turned over a whole episode to the memory of Jean Marsh who died this month. Writer Simon Guerrier joined regular hosts Dwayne and Philip to talk about his memories of writing for and working with Jean as she reprised the role of companion Sara Kingdom on audio for Big Finish.
There are also reflections on her wider career, and contributions from both Sophie Aldred and Sylvester McCoy, who worked with Jean on the 1989 television story ‘Battlefield’, where she played Morgaine.
David Tennant Does a Podcast with… Georgia Tennant
Usually confined to the adverts and an executive producer credit, Georgia Tennant stole the podcast reins for its April 8th edition. Why? For the inevitable end-of-season tables turning interview of David himself.
Her interview takes in his upbringing, drama school, Doctor Who and more, with contributions from Michael Sheen and Arabella Weir.
Also this month, there’s an episode with Rosamund Pike, former Bond girl and the star of ‘The Wheel of Time’. She and Tennant worked together on 2014’s What We Did On Out Holiday. It’s another great chat, talking of her experiences making Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan, and her formative years as the only child to classical musician parents.
Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake – David & Georgia Tennant
Since host Kathy Burke hung up her robes, the celebrity funeral planning podcast has entered its Purgatory Season with guest hosts.
Here, there’s another Tennant takeover and Georgia is on fine form as she takes David through his plans for a memorable send off. They include a rendition of ‘Defying Gravity’, a eulogy from Michael Sheen and death by mini-eggs.
Also in the season are Pearl Mackie & Kiell Smith-Bynoe.
The News Agents – What Keeps Charlie Brooker up at night?
Black Mirror writer Charlie Brooker appeared on the April 25th edition to talk about the series and more. The topics included the future of TV in a world of AI, and how the show differs from its beginnings in 2011. Also, he drops the titbit that he was once approached to write for Doctor Who.
Scarred for Life – Paul Magrs
Writer Paul Magrs guests on the show and reveals three terrors from his childhood.
Before that, there’s a wide ranging chat about his career, taking in the recent Puffin Doctor Who crossovers, the town of Whitby and The Brenda & Effie Mysteries book series, and his YouTube book review channel.
Looking back up the podcast’s timeline, they’ve also interviewed Michelle Gomez, Michael Sheen and Toby Hadoke.
Film Stories
This month Simon Brew tackled the tales behind Batman the Movie, Young Adult, Drive, Threads, Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Alive.
Also this month, Simon spoke to directors Christopher Landon (Drop) and Patricia Riggen (G20).
So, happy listening… and do let us know if you have any recommendations.
