Welcome to the CultBox Podcast roundup for September 2021
Our favourites this month have included, in no particular order…
The Line-Up with Shaun Keaveny: Jodie Whittaker – Mud, Mates & Wine Flights
The Line Up sees host Shaun Keaveny talk his guest through their fantasy music festival. From the location, to the food and the company, as well as the acts, it provides jumping off points for a host of musical memories.
Jodie Whittaker tells tales of a mud-filled Glastonbury, back-packing in New Zealand and, naturally, plenty of Coldplay – all while designing a quite fantastic sounding event. This hour-long chat is a terrifically engaging listen, offering a real insight into the passions and personality of the actress. Also, at the end, there’s some insight into her feelings during these final months on Doctor Who.
The Two Shot Podcast #159 – Giles Terera
In another fascinating chat, the genial Craig Parkinson talks to Giles Terera about his new book ‘Hamilton and Me’ which chronicles the actor’s time playing Aaron Burr in the London version of Hamilton.
As we have said before, The Two Shot Podcast is always worth a listen and it’s back catalogue is pretty stellar, including Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill, Torchwood’s Kai Owen, Anjli Mohindra, Nicole Kidman and pretty much the whole cast of Line of Duty!
Short History Of…
Paul McGann continues his run of involving history shows, tacking subjects such as Pompeii, Tutankhamun, The Black Death and The Space Race. Augmented with sound effects and a little dramatic licence by Noiser Podcasts, it really is like a history lesson from the Doctor!
Back to One #170
Peter Rinaldi meets up with Alessandro Nivola for a further conversation – this time focussed on his preparation for, and performance in the prequel Sopranos movie The Many Saints of Newark. They discuss his process, working on the film and how it might be career-changing.
Films to be Buried With #165
Host Brett Goldstein holds another wonderfully life-affirming chat with the irrepressible Nicole Yvette Brown (Community) about film, life and everything in-between.
The Doctor Who Show
In a first for The Doctor Who Show, hosts Rob and Dave take a deep dive into a novel, the infamous Doctor Who New Adventure Lungbarrow. Set on Gallifrey and the last McCoy era story of the run, it also revealed a lot of the so-called “Cartmel Masterplan”. Additionally, their short episode released in the wake of the news that Russell T Davies is returning as showrunner is well worth a listen too.
Happy Place with Fearne Cotton
In a frank and revealing interview, David Harewood (Homeland, Supergirl) discusses psychosis and his new book ‘Maybe I Don’t Belong Here‘. Looking through the back catalogue, there are also episodes with a host of famous faces including Billie Piper, Lena Headley and Natalie Dormer.
Film Stories with Simon Brew
In the month of September, Film Stories with Simon Brew took a look at the stories behind the following movies: Casino Royale, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Firm, Meet the Parents, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and The Mist – plus an epic 200th show on Field of Dreams with special guest, writer/director Phil Alden Robinson.
Also, we need to make a late recommendation for last month’s fascinating chat with Back To The Future‘s writer/producer Bob Gale too.
Happy listening – and do let us know if you have any recommendations too.
