‘Peter Cushing: A Life in Film’ book review

For many CultBox readers, Peter Cushing is instantly recognisable for a number of roles. For many he was Star Wars villain Grand Moff Tarkin, the ruthless Imperial Commander running the Death Star in the original movie who appeared to be Darth Vader’s boss. Like Sir Alec Guinness, he lent the film an air of credibility amid the laser bolts, droids and spiritual mumbo-jumbo.

‘Broadchurch’: Episode 6 review

One of the wonderful things about Broadchurch is that it has made water cooler detectives of us all. Heck, even Ant & Dec were jabbering on about it on their Saturday evening entertainment trough; a sure sign that Chris Chibnall’s drama has deservedly reached the point of cultural supersaturation. The Geordie finger puppets suspected Reverend Paul Coates of murder, and Episode 6 doesn’t do anything to disprove that theory.

‘Touch’: Season 1 DVD review

Given the star and showrunner – 24’s Kiefer Sutherland and Heroes creator Tim Kring respectively – you could be forgiven for expecting something of a thrill-a-minute ride from Touch. It eschews expectations, however, providing a narrative that, whilst occasionally contrived, relies on elegantly scripted drama rather than intense action beats.

‘Doctor Who’: The Clara variations and other mysteries

‘The Bells of Saint John’ was a rip-roaring series (re)opener from the pen of showrunner Steven Moffat. In fact, when you consider the up and downloading of souls into a computer system, the repeated (catch)phrase, the direct addressing of the audience, the ringing TARDIS telephone and the slow rotating reveal, the episode could not have been more Moffat-ish if it tried.
