Episode 11: ‘Heaven Sent’
Written by Steven Moffat.
Directed by Rachel Talalay (Filming block 6).
Official synopsis: “Trapped in a world unlike any other he has seen, the Doctor faces the greatest challenge of his many lives. One final test. And he must face it alone. Pursued by the fearsome creature known only as the Veil, he must attempt the impossible. If he makes it through, Gallifrey is waiting…”
Peter Capaldi: “It makes you realise how much you bounce off other actors. It’s a really strange episode but I don’t want to give anything away.”
Brian Minchin: “This is a ‘single-hander’ which only features the Doctor and no-one else. It’s the first time we’ve ever done an episode like it. And it’s the most virtuoso, fantastic piece of writing from Steven [Moffat].”

Brian Minchin: “Doctor Who has always been about taking risks. It’s never sat down and done a normal episode. It’s always done something extraordinary. Our audience likes to be challenged.”
Daily Star: Episode 11 is a single-hander story with just Peter Capaldi and no other cast members.
Rachel Talalay: “Episode 11 is one of the most complicated and different episodes that I’ve ever done. I can’t tell you anything about it but it just has my head in spaghetti.”
Steven Moffat: “I’ve got a script where I’ve set myself a ludicrous challenge. When Episode 11 comes up, you’ll see just how ludicrous a challenge I’ve set myself. I’m in a state of panic about it.”
Rachel Talalay: “I can say about [Episode] 11, some of the most flummoxing challenges I’ve ever been given as a director.”
Steven Moffat: “I’ve figured out the cliffhanger to the penultimate episode of [Season 9]. And it’s a whopper. Ohh, I don’t think you’ll see this coming!”
