5 crossovers that ‘Doctor Who’ fans would love from Big Finish

Posted Filed under

With Big Finish now able to play with elements of 21st Century Doctor Who, we have already been treated to some amazing dramas such as ‘The Diary of River Song’, where River encountered the Eight Doctor, and ‘UNIT: Extinction’ in which an Auton invasion was foiled by Kate Stewart, Osgood and the team.

We have also heard the audio debut of John Hurt’s brilliant War Doctor from inside the Time War.

As so many new characters have become available, it is perhaps inevitable that we fans will want to see some parings that never occurred on screen.

To that end, we have already enjoyed Strax with ‘Jago and Litefoot’ and at the recent Big Finish Day 8 event it was announced that the War Doctor will encounter his former companion Leela in a 2017 box set.

The mind boggles as to what glorious mashups Big Finish might offer us next.

Here are a few ideas…

UNIT vs Torchwood

UNIT Torchwood

Torchwood has been around in one form or another since the time of Queen Victoria, but it would be great to hear Cardiff’s finest have a brush with Kate Stewart, Osgood and pals.

Jack’s gang had reasonably friendly relations with the former UNIT regime, even borrowing Martha Jones for a time, but the two organisations seem to operate from very different angles.

Would they join forces or find themselves on opposite sides of an alien situation?

River Song Meets…

Doctor Who River Song

With force-of-nature River Song on the scene, there’s surely scope for a box set where she uses her vortex manipulator to do the rounds of the multiverse… perhaps something in the style of ‘The Worlds of Big Finish’.

Just off the top of our heads, we are seeing River infuriating Osgood (who is the bigger fan of the Doctor?), enthralling Churchill (we were almost disappointed that an ancient Queen in ‘The Churchill Years’ wasn’t her), raising a glass or six with Iris Wildthyme and Panda, doing a star turn on the stage at the New Regency Theatre for Jago and Litefoot, working a con with Vienna Salvatori and then dancing a merry tune around the Master.

John Barrowman Alex Kingston Captain Jack River Song

Of course, the biggest prize of all is the thought of River meeting Captain Jack Harkness… although we fear the two might not be able to co-exist in the same story due to near lethal levels of flirting and innuendo!

The War Doctor and the Time War Master

Doctor Who John Hurt War Doctor Derek Jacobi master

It has been suggested before, but who can resist the prospect of seeing Derek Jacobi’s Master working in concert with John Hurt’s War Doctor against the Dalek threat?

Perhaps we would need to see the events which caused the Master to run to the end of time and hide as a human (although there might need to be a little covering explanation for the fact that Professor Yana claimed to be discovered as a child).

Why not give us the start of the Jacobi incarnation as a regeneration from Alex MacQueen’s terrific audio Master too, just for good measure.
