Well, here’s a thought…
What if Katherine Kelly’s character in BBC Three’s new Doctor Who spin-off is in fact an undeclared future incarnation of the Doctor? Is Steven Moffat hiding one last surprise in plain sight before he hands over the show?
Created by YA author Patrick Ness, Class began filming in Cardiff last week.
Former Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly is playing “a powerful new presence” at Coal Hill School, the BBC has revealed.
Set in contemporary London, the eight-part series will premiere later this year on BBC Three in the UK and on BBC America in the US.
The official press release hints:
“What if your planet was massacred and you were the sole survivor?
What if a legendary figure out of space and time found you a place to hide?
But what if the things that want to kill you have tracked you down?
And worst of all, what if you haven’t studied for your A-Levels…?”
We can safely assume that the “legendary figure out of space and time” is the Doctor, with a cameo appearance from Peter Capaldi almost certain to happen.
Who is “the sole survivor”? Presumably this is one of the four Sixth Former students – our bet is on Sophie Hopkins, based solely on her positioning in the cast photo below and Steven Moffat’s claim that the show is “a British Buffy“.
But who would the Doctor trust more than anyone else in the universe to look after this survivor? Himself, of course.
Remember, the first ever female Doctor, Joanna Lumley, appeared (albeit unofficially) in Steven Moffat’s Red Nose Day special ‘The Curse of Fatal Death’ and with Missy (and others) the idea of a female Doctor in the future is inevitable at some point.
What if Katherine Kelly is actually the Doctor rather than just someone who might be acting on his behalf?!
Writer Patrick Ness commented last week: “…how lucky we are to get Katherine Kelly! She’s been stunning in Happy Valley, The Night Manager and Mr Selfridge, just wait until you see her here.”
The show’s cast also includes Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah as four Sixth Formers, with Doctor Who actor Nigel Betts reprising the role of Mr Armitage.
