Steven Moffat has described BBC Three’s new Doctor Who spin-off as “dark and sexy and right now.”
Created by YA author Patrick Ness, Class began filming in Cardiff last week.
The eight-part series is set in contemporary London and follows four students with “hidden secrets and desires” at Coal Hill School.
Steven Moffat, executive producer on Class and Doctor Who, commented: “We had the read through of the first few episodes last week, and there was a whole row of them. Coal Hill School has been part of Doctor Who since the very first shoot in 1963, but this new show is anything but history.”
He teased: “Class is dark and sexy and right now.”
The Sherlock writer added: “I’ve always wondered if there could be a British Buffy – it’s taken the brilliant Patrick Ness to figure out how to make it happen.”
Class will premiere later this year on BBC Three in the UK and on BBC America in the US.
The show’s cast includes Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah as four Sixth Formers, with Katherine Kelly (Coronation Street) playing a “powerful” teacher at Coal Hill School and Doctor Who actor Nigel Betts reprising the role of Mr Armitage.
