In the early years of Doctor Who, companions often came aboard the TARDIS because they had nowhere else to go. Orphans and stowaways joined the Time Lord on his adventures, along with less reluctant fellow travellers.
The first instalment of this two-part finale left us with Princess Ariadne sentenced to a traitor’s death; her fate sealed after the revelation that she aided Jason’s escape from the palace in the aftermath of his failed assassination attempt on Queen Pasiphae.
With the werewolf shenanigans of ‘Hunger Pangs’ past, and not even referenced, the opening part of Atlantis’s Christmas-straddling finale was rooted in earlier events. Returning in a dream that saw Hercules dead, Jason was reminded of the fateful bargain he struck with Pasiphae’s vengeful sister, the witch Circe. It was a creepy and effective start to a storyline full of promise.
BBC One’s new adventure series Atlantis continues this weekend with ‘Touched by the Gods – Part One’ and Jason is reminded of his promise to Circe and her grim warning should he fail to honour their pact.
With a two-part finale on the horizon, this week’s Atlantis felt very much like a one-shot, although it did reacquaint us with the city’s regal characters who have been out of the story for a while.
BBC One’s new adventure series Atlantis continues this weekend with ‘Hunger Pangs’ and a starving Jason cannot believe his luck when he stumbles across an abandoned feast. But it soon becomes clear that Jason’s gluttony has come at a price as he begins to exhibit some seriously strange behaviour.
After the dramatic events of ‘Pandora’s Box’ culminating in Medusa’s transformation into the snake headed monstrosity of legend, we had hoped Atlantis might maintain some momentum. Instead, tonight’s ‘The Price of Hope’ was a transitory piece, appearing principally to introduce two characters for later in the saga.
