According to subscribers who have received their issue of Doctor Who Magazine 581 in the post, the title of the Doctor Who BBC centenary special is The Power of the Doctor.
This is a title reminiscent of two previous Doctor Who episodes from two different eras; 1966’s The Power of the Daleks with Patrick Troughton and 2012’s The Power of Three with Matt Smith.
There also are three 2013 episode titles containing “of the Doctor”; The Name of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor and The Time of the Doctor, There was also a 2013 minisode titled The Night of the Doctor.
Social media reaction to the title has been mixed between fans opining that the special’s title is either nostalgic or reductive.
A brief synopsis of The Power of the Doctor was shared for its eventual release on Blu-ray.
Her final battle. Her deadliest enemies. The Thirteenth Doctor faces multiple threats from Daleks, Cybermen and the Master, in a fight for her very existence.

Subsequent to the article, it has been discovered that Russell T Davies deems it “fantastic” and “gorgeous” with “lots of surprises”, it will be the last episode scored by composer Segun Akinola, producer Nikki Wilson calls it a “thrilling, high-stakes journey” and Jodie Whittaker is rumoured to take a sartorial sentimental journey with former Doctor’s costumes.
The Power of the Doctor is confirmed to air some time in October during the BBC’s week-long celebration of the October 18 centenary of their charter.
BBC America typically runs a Doctor Who marathon leading up to a Doctor Who special and, according to their schedule, there is no such marathon in the week prior to the BBC’s centenary week so BBC One and BBC America will likely transmit the 90-minute spectacular later in the week, likely on October 23 as part of a BBC week-long celebration.
Doctor Who Magazine 582 includes a The Power of the Doctor preview including interviews with Sacha Dhawan, Janet Fielding, Sophie Aldred, Patrick O’Kane and Ray Holman. It is available at newsstands in the UK and by digital issue on Thursday, September 15.
