Hello there (again?) Is Ewan McGregor about to dust off his Jedi robes one more time?
In 2022, Ewan McGregor reprised his version of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Disney+ mini-series of the same name.
Set between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the start of A New Hope, the show saw the retired Jedi Master coaxed out of his self-imposed reclusion on Tatooine when the young Princess Leia was abducted. His reappearance drew the interest of the Inquisitors and forced another confrontation with Anakin Sykwalker, now Darth Vader.
While he’s made encouraging noises before, there’s been nothing to suggest that Lucasfilm have a particular desire to further Obi-Wan’s story.
However, at the recent L.A. Comic Con, in response to fan questions, the star reportedly confirmed that the studio is currently “exploring” ideas for a follow-up. He went on to say he’d love to reunite with Hayden Christensen and don Obi-Wan’s Clone Wars era armour too.
Time frame
In terms of fitting further adventures in, time appears to be on their side. There’s still nine years left in story telling terms before McGregor needs to become the weary “Old Ben.” Age-wise, he’s 53 while Sir Alec Guinness was 62 when he first played the role and, dare we say it, McGregor’s looking pretty sprightly in comparison too.
We suppose the issue is finding a story that needs telling. Surely there can’t be another confrontation between Obi-Wan and Vader, as the last stretched the bounds of storytelling credulity, enjoyable as it was. Equally, anything involving the young Skywalker twins feels like a non-starter, without mind-wipes or some such. However, a tale set in part or fully in the Clone Wars era sounds like a lot of fun.
We’ll keep you posted on Obi-Wan Kenobi and any further news of a second series.
Star Wars Universe
While the Star Wars Movie slate appears to be quiet again – there’s plenty rumoured or in development, such as Rey and Lando projects, but nothing officially announced save for the The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. That’s aiming for a May 2026 release.
On television, post the airing and subsequent cancellation of The Acolyte, we can look forward to Skeleton Crew which begins on December 3rd.
Following that, in 2025, is the long-awaited return Andor. The second, and final series, should follow the rebel pilot right up to the opening moments of Rogue One.
You can find all the Star Wars live-action and animated series and movies on Disney+. The streamer also has a documentary on composer John Williams which premieres on November 1st, 2024 too.
